Africa’s carbon market is entering an increasingly important phase. Across the continent, conversations around climate finance, carbon markets and sustainable investment are moving beyond potential towards a more pressing question: how can Africa translate its opportunities into credible projects, investment and real transactions? At Renewables in Africa, we continue to follow the developments shaping Africa’s energy transition and the wider climate finance landscape. Carbon markets are becoming an important part of that conversation as African countries, project developers and investors explore new mechanisms for mobilising climate finance and supporting sustainable development.
As an official Media Partner of the Carbon Markets Africa Summit (CMAS) 2026, we are pleased to share that the programme for this year’s Summit is now available. Taking place from 13–15 October 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, CMAS will bring together policymakers, investors, project developers, corporates, carbon buyers and sustainability leaders from across Africa and beyond. The Summit is hosted by the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Environment, in partnership with AfDB, UNDP, DBSA and AUDA-NEPAD.
Moving From Ambition to Execution
For us at Renewables in Africa, one of the most significant aspects of this year’s programme is its emphasis on execution and transaction readiness. Africa has considerable potential within the global carbon market landscape, but unlocking that potential requires more than recognising the opportunity. Projects need to become investment-ready, developers need access to capital and markets, investors and buyers need credible opportunities, and policymakers need frameworks capable of supporting effective carbon market activity.
CMAS 2026 is designed to bring these different parts of the ecosystem together. More than 500 participants from over 30 countries are expected, with the programme featuring a curated pipeline of investment-ready African carbon projects, investor and buyer roundtables, deal rooms and structured meetings. Practical engagement will also focus on Article 6, market access, project bankability and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
The emphasis on transactions is particularly important. For project developers, CMAS creates opportunities to engage with potential investors and buyers. For investors and carbon buyers, it provides access to emerging African projects and the organisations behind them. For policymakers and other market stakeholders, it provides a platform to engage with some of the practical issues influencing carbon market development across the continent. In simple terms, this year’s Summit brings projects, capital and buyers into one place.
Building Credible and Investment-Ready African Carbon Markets
Article 6, market access, project bankability and MRV will form an important part of the CMAS 2026 conversation. These areas matter because developing a promising carbon project does not automatically make that project ready for investment or market participation. Investors and buyers need credible opportunities capable of meeting technical and market requirements, while developers need greater access to finance, buyers and the information necessary to move projects forward.
At Renewables in Africa, we believe these conversations are closely connected to the wider challenge of financing Africa’s energy transition. Renewable energy development, climate finance, carbon markets and sustainable investment increasingly intersect around one fundamental question: how can Africa mobilise more capital towards credible projects capable of delivering economic and environmental value?
The structured meetings, deal rooms and investor and buyer roundtables planned for CMAS provide an opportunity to move some of these conversations from theory towards practical engagement. The inclusion of a curated pipeline of investment-ready African carbon projects further strengthens that transaction-focused approach.

Renewables in Africa at CMAS 2026
As an official Media Partner, Renewables in Africa will continue to follow and amplify key developments from CMAS 2026 in the lead-up to the Summit. We will share programme developments, important conversations and opportunities relevant to Africa’s renewable energy, carbon markets, climate finance and sustainable investment ecosystem.
For our community, CMAS presents an opportunity to better understand how carbon markets fit within Africa’s wider energy transition and climate finance landscape. With more than 500 participants from over 30 countries, investment-ready African carbon projects, investors, buyers, policymakers and structured deal-making opportunities coming together in Kigali, the Summit is positioning execution and transaction readiness at the centre of the conversation.
Africa’s carbon market opportunity will ultimately depend on the continent’s ability to translate potential into credible projects, investment and transactions. At Renewables in Africa, we believe bringing projects, capital, policymakers and buyers together is an important part of that process, and we look forward to following the conversations and developments emerging from Kigali.
