For the past 20 years, the solar home system (SHS) has been the dominant means of facilitating energy access for off-grid rural communities in the developing world. SHSs have proved to be a sound solution to the difficulties in providing affordable and stable electricity to those likely to be left behind by other approaches.
Indeed, evidence to date suggests that use of SHSs has accelerated the global electrification rate. SHSs have also elicited improvements in quality of life of off-grid African rural communities, particularly education and reducing reliance on kerosene, an expensive and environmentally harmful fossil fuel.
But the elephant in the room is, do we have enough skills for innovation and designing of SHS in Africa? Open Energy Labs is filling up this void by providing people with the technical skills for designing and building SHS. Through a “learn by making” approach Open Energy Labs is giving people the tools to develop universal access to electricity.
Open Energy Labs aims at fusing both theoretical and practical, technical knowledge, with a strong emphasis on mutual learning and exchange of knowledge, sociotechnical experimentation, adaptation and social embedding.
“Recent research has shown that the electrification of Africa is being held back by a lack of localised technical capacity to build and maintain renewable energy systems. But students can’t learn about electricity if they don’t have access to it. Therefore, educational institutions in Africa are forced to focus on theoretical learning, as they lack the resources to teach science effectively.” says Samson Sahmland, Open Energy Labs Founder
Many pioneering and innovative activities are currently taking place globally. But in order to develop a greener and more equitable society, Open Energy has developed Energy Makers Academy (EMA), an educational app and connected hardware kit which takes a “learn by making” approach to teaching students electronics. EMA does this by giving students the materials and knowledge to build a fully functional renewable electricity supply, able to provide reliable power for lighting and mobile-phone charging.
Open Energy Labs is focused on developing solutions that can reach all parts of the population in sustainable ways, especially within off-grid use of renewable energy technologies. This creates a potential for transferring practical experience and knowledge between these activities especially in Africa, where they are addressing key barrier for renewable energy technology in Africa, regarding the limited technical capacity to design, install, operate, manage, and maintain renewable energy systems
Yours truly together with Open Energy Labs invite you to a FREE WEBINAR to enlighten you more on the same.
